Hi Gang,
UPDATE: issue resolved - turned out it was simply this ... under Win 11 > Display Settings, I selected ‘Extend these displays’ with laptop screen as ‘main display’ so I switched 'main display' to external screen and behold ... full screen on double clicking preview window as expected. Obviously when I drag VS23 onto laptop screen and double click, I get black screen but that’s not an issue as I want to only run VS23 on the larger external screen. Cudos to Corel Support who were very prompt in responding to my dilemma
ORIGINAL MSG:
Yesterday I was able to play timeline video and, whilst it played, I double clicked in the Preview Window to see the video in full screen on my display monitor. Today, when I double click in the Preview Window, the monitor just displays black. The monitor seems to be working fine, given I'm viewing my VS project with it.
Thoughts?

Hi deanSorry but never had a problem with that option always plays the video as ok. When in full screen / black does it play audio You can also select the icon lower right of preview screen to play in full with controls, you could try that

Thanx for assisting Trevor and in response ... When in full screen / black it does play audio and the icon (lower right of preview screen) whilst enlarging the preview, still results in black screen (with audio) when double clicked. I do also have K-Lite Codec Pack 18.3.0 Basic installed so not sure whether that specific version plays any part, given I've had earlier versions installed along side VS 23 for ages.

Hi Dean Does this occur with every type of video. What type of video are you using? Can you start a new project, insert the Sample Lake video - does that play OK. If not you could try resetting the program by renaming the 26.0 folder to 26.0_old assuming you are using vs 2023. A new 26.0 folder will be generated when starting the program. If no improvement you can revert back to using the original 26.0 folder.

Thanx for persevering Trevor and in response ... this occurs with every type of video ... I'm typically using mp4 AVI and MOV ... Sample Lake resulted in same issue ... 26.0 method didn't resolve ... strange thing is, this wasn't an issue till about two weeks ago i.e. prior to that, I've been using VS23 for months and no prob ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) in the past two weeks, I sanatized the internal SSD then fresh installed Win11 then reloaded VS23. I then inserted to VS23 hotfix for staggered rendering (which I had also installed prior to sanitize). Does this provide any clues?

Hi dean, Personally I'm a little confused with your issue. On my laptop when I double click the preview window, it doesn't expand. In my case the dropdown box appears for crop and scale modes. To expand the preview window to fill the entire screen on my laptop I need to click on the "Enlarge" button. This works flawlessly. In your post title you state; Preview Window v External Monitor. What that does this mean? Are you working with one or two monitors? What is your setup? Is it a typical PC hooked up with a monitor or two or is it a laptop connected to an external monitor? Are you trying to move the Preview window to a separate monitor to increase the space for your timelines? Please explain.

Candive As deans original post..... You need to start playing the clip / project, whilst playing double click the preview screen. Now the video should fill your screen – double click again to return. dean Do you think it may be a graphics issue, go to settings preferences performance tab to deselect acceleration options, does that make a difference.

Thanks Trevor Andrew I learned something new! dean , this is what I found on the old website. The post is very old so I'm not sure if it is the same issue but maybe updating the the direct x drivers? Not sure. black screen on playback preview in edit modeAlso, this is something that I always do when my system starts acting funny; In Search; type CMD to find the Command Prompt. Run CMD as Administrator by right clicking it (and you get the following prompt) C:\Windows\System32> dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth (scans the windows system database to make sure its ok) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (restores any corrupt system files) Note: use the up arrow to bring back the last command for subsequent editing new commandsIf the system database is good, run SFC /scannow C:\Windows\System32> sfc /scannow

HI everyone, 10 days ago, Windows did it's monthly updates. And it's not unusual for that to break something, especially something like a video editor that uses windows functions to operate. Also, a bit more clarity in the problem: the original description implies that the system has 2 displays - the normal system display, and a 2nd monitor which is often configured to show whatever is in the preview window, with the library and timeline on the main display. If that's not the case then it seems the system has only one display, and that now shows black when playing a video/project file, but otherwise operates normally when editing: this unusual performance occurring a only recently. Did you revert to a normal user interface after playing the preview window "full screen"?
perhaps a better description of the actual system and how it is used, and what the problem is in greater detail would help???

Hi Trevor, Candive and Davidk...
Trevor - deselect acceleration options made no difference
Prior to trying Candive's and Davidk's suggestions, I attempted VS23 repair via Add Remove Programs and that failed i.e. VS reported 'The Setup encountered a problem while trying to configure your software'. So, per OP update, VS23 re-installation initially rectified the issue last night but today the issue is back. I made no other adjustment to VS23 nor OS and last OS update was 17 May.
Candive - direct x drivers was not the issue and CMD scripts failed to resolve, despite rectifying some system anomalies.
Davidk - I run an external monitor in conjunction with laptop monitor using Win11 'Extended Displays' setting. I always have VS23 displayed on the extended screen coz its a much bigger screen than laptop's. Thanx for later clarifying what you were referring to re 'normal user interface'. Yes I do however, the icon your referring to and its result is not my issue. When I start a video in the timeline, then double click in the preview window, the video ordinarily goes complete full screen (the icon you're referring to is 'almost' full screen) whereas now, all I get is black screen. I can then revert back to normal user interface or run 'almost' full screen using the icon if I wish.
Any further thoughts?

Hi Dean, 2 images attached show what I was referring to. Captured with a recent project of mine re a holiday in SW western Australia
In normal preview screen, there is an icon to show what is in the preview window on the full screen of the display In full screen mode, there is an icon to return the display to normal preview mode Icons for these functions are highlighted in the images.
